It’s the little things

Ilissa, the owner of Binx had sent me a link for the coolest book a long time ago. I had put it in the back of my head and in my favorites/shopping area of my bookmarks. I knew i would go back one day for it, but i tell myself constantly..”priorities Rebecca, priorities.” Ilissa knows of our adoption plans and so sweetly remembered how much i adored the book when she sent the link. I need it i told her. I mean, what designer wouldn’t want a book filled with fabulous typography!? And for a baby? A must have.

Yesterday my mailman dropped off the prettiest little package. Ooo-la-la! The wrapping was fun and puffy. I quickly tossed aside the junk and bills and opened up the book from Ilissa. I seriously had tears in my eyes. Her heartfelt note thanking me for her logo and my support of her new endeavor really meant the world to me. I really love what i do, and it is clients like Ilissa that i am so lucky to interact with on a daily basis that just make me so incredibly happy!

Look how fun this book is!

do what you love…

Meet Don Fisher.

Who was Don Fisher you ask?

Don Fisher was the founder of The Gap. In 1969, Don and his wife, Doris, opened the first Gap store in San Francisco. They wanted to make it easier to buy a pair of jeans. They soon fell in love with what they were doing.

And they ended up making history.
Why am I telling you this? Well, because I just love Don’s philosophy of “Do what you love.”

Inspiring creativity, doing the right thing and delivering results. Not that I am looking to revolutionize the stationery industry or anything like that, but I just wanted to say how much I truly and whole-heartedly enjoy working on a daily basis. I get emails more frequently than I ever thought I would asking how I balance my life, how I started my business or how it is to enjoy what I do each day. I really enjoy receiving the emails and it means the world to me that I can offer advice, inspiration or guidance. I also thought about this when working with my friend Tara on her giveaway and how excited she is for her venture. I think creativity feeds from one another.

I think I am lucky. My grandmother told me I am blessed.

She told me that luck is winning the lottery, that luck doesn’t come from not working hard and having determination. OK, I believe her, but I still feel like I am lucky! Shucks, if this is what it feels like to win the lottery, give me a bottle and i’ll package it up!

OK… sentimental stuff aside, I wanted to just step up on my soapbox for a brief moment and shout out and tell you to do what you love! Even if it running, cooking, coloring, photography, archery (yup, that), reading, etc, etc, etc… just do it! Make it a point each day to do something you love. It will make a world of difference and you will thank yourself.

…do what you love!

Last week I posted the beach invites for you all to see. It was such a fun project to work on, as well as a great family to work with. Most of it was done long distance over packages, conference calls and emails. I did meet Meredith, the bride once, but never met her mom or dad. I was so surprised and had tears when I got this special note on Friday. It truly makes each day that I design that much better!

( I hope she doesn’t get mad that I am showing you all her fun sketch)!

it’s a cupcake social

It’s no secret I’m not a huge fan of cake. I don’t know why, I just never have been. However, I have a sweet tooth and i do enjoy cupcakes and cookies. Well, I am very excited that I have been able to set up a sleepover weekend with Ellie, my 7 year old niece. (She is the inspiration behind my Ellie bird illustrations). I’m am just so darn excited. She loves to cook and “do art.” She told my sister…(and i quote) “I need to spend 2 nights at Aunt Rebecca’s and Uncle Chris’s because we get up very early to do art.” Well… 2 nights it is! I have been planning all of our art projects, but also cooking projects. She does love to cook too. So when I was reading one of my daily blog reads, i found Cupcake Social on Etsy and i think i’m going to order some for our weekend extravaganza.

Happy new Year!

From my studio to you, i hope you have a very happy and healthy 2010! May all of your wishes come true.

I’m battling a very terrible cold right now, so i’m going to take some time today and tomorrow to rest up so i’m ready for 2010 in full force. But before i sign off for the week, i want to leave you with some great words. A little inspiration for the new year:

There are always plenty of possibilities, with new ones being born every moment. On a regular basis, pick a new possibility and explore it fully. Turn down a road you’ve never traveled before, and find out what’s there. Be curious, and let your curiosity lead you in the direction of new discoveries.

Inject some fresh, new experiences into your life. Challenge yourself and add richness to your life by stepping outside your regular routine.

Surprise your senses with things you’ve never experienced before. Wake up your spirit by uncovering previously hidden treasures in your world.

Add to life’s list of joys. Give new depth and richness to your perspective.

The good things in your life are yours now because there was a time when you chose to find them. Explore some new possibilities, and there is much new value you can find. – Ralph Marston

Yowzers! What a fun-filled week! I’m so happy though, even though it was busy the week went as slow as molasses. Which is so great, because i feel like i got to enjoy it rather than having it zip right by. (Although i do miss Christopher this week it is almost like we pass in the wind). At least we have the weekend though.

* I started running again this week after a mini break after the NYC race. It felt good to get back into it.

* Had a delish lunch at Wheatfields with my friend Deborah. First off, if you live in the area you must try it. Secondly, watch out for this Deborah lady… she is going to rock the world shortly! An amazing woman with some energy that surpasses mine by 200%! She has some great things going on in her life right now. One day, you will see me refer back to this post… i promise that. Keeps your eyes out for a logo design i will be working on for her.

*  The Pantone Color of the year was announced as a most stunning shade of turquoise. I’ve got my sketchbook ready for the new year and a new bride ready to use it! Fabulous with shades of orange, grays and black. Read about it here.

Friday finds include a new wedding blog i found  -100 Layer Cake. Still need a few stocking stuffers? There is time if you order today! Oh Joy has some fun notebooks. Check them out. { hint, hint Santa }! Or, Jess L.C Jewelry is so darn fun and fabulous. If you get your order in, i guarantee the person you are giving it to won’t be disappointed.

Enjoy your weekend everyone. Here’s to finishing up last minute shopping, wrapping, baking and get some relaxation in there too!

What a race!

What a wonderful weekend. It was so great to see my friend Michelle and play catch-up. Saturday was a bit of a debacle, but the good times with great friends made it all worth it. The weekend ended up being cold. Not chilly, just plain cold.

Saturday evening we went to dinner at a quaint restaurant called Flatbush Farm. Christopher and i shared a steak for 2, that was so delicious it melted in our mouths. Of course, realizing we needed to get up at 4:30 am to make our way into Manhattan, we tried to make it an early night but that was impossible as we were having too much fun.

Sunday morning for the race ended up being about 33 degrees and breezy. Wow. Luckily for Michelle and i we would be running. The boys, not so much. They were such troopers though and hung out in the park until we finished. This was our first race so we were really excited and nervous. That didn’t last long once we started and paced ourselves. There were a couple of rather hefty hills we had to face in Central Park, but we did it! Our final time was 1:07:46! Not bad at all. So now of course, we are scoping out the next race! The feeling is somewhat addictive.

Here are some photos:
Nothing like early morning in the city. Making our way to the park.

The crowds… thousands of runners i would guess.

Getting ready for the whistle!

Here we go!

And our finish:

Afterwards, we were starving, so the boys took us to an adorable restaurant with a fireplace and we loaded up on much needed carbs! Mmmmm…. french toast with Nutella and caramelized bananas.

So now we are addicted and looking forward to our next run. Perhaps a half-marathon. We are thinking of traveling for it though. If you race, where are your favorite places to run? Would love some suggestions.
